The Parable of the Hidden Treasure Explained

Matthew 13:44 - “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field".

"Kingdom" (malkuth in Hebrew) refers to dominion, rulership, lordship, authority, monarchy, and realm.

God has sole dominion and rulership of the one true kingdom: heaven. The Parable of the Hidden Treasure calls us to surrender the psychological grip we have on our possessions to proverbially purchase, or commit to, the field in which this treasure lies. We must acknowledge that the earthly possessions in which we’re given dominion (Genesis 1:26) shouldn’t take precedence over that which He has both sacrificed (John 3:16) and purchased (1 Corinthians 7:23) for our eternal salvation: Himself, and our souls.

Conversely, it’s a commendable reminder that Jesus came to live as a human here on earth from His throne in heaven (remember how the treasure akin to the kingdom of heaven was temporarily buried before the field was purchased?) to love, reach, lead, and guide us. He was not a rich man, but He sold His one tangible possession (His physical body) through His death on the cross so He could purchase our souls (the field containing our one great treasure: The Holy Spirit) in order that we may be forgiven and live with Him for eternity.

How does your field look? Is the majority of it filled with treasure?
